CARDIFF -- Cardiff manager Malky Mackay was back on the hot seat after his side was thumped by Southampton 3-0 in the English Premier League on Thursday. A pair by Jay Rodriguez and another by Rickie Lambert, all in the first half hour, helped Southampton cruise to its first victory in seven games. Fans of the visitors chanted to Mackay, "Youre getting sacked in the morning," and he couldnt defend himself in the face of a woeful display. Cardiff owner Vincent Tan wanted Mackay out last week, but after Mackay vowed to stay and was backed by team fans, club chairman Mehmet Dalman said on Sunday that Mackay was "in charge for the forseeable future." However, Cardiff supporters were booing Mackay and the team by fulltime on Thursday, not that Tan might have heard. He left his seat five minutes before time. Really, he had no choice or there could be devastating consequences. "A heart surgery will make you kind of realize you need to start doing things right, especially diet wise," Bryant said. "Ive really cleaned things up a little bit. So far, so good." Bryants comeback from a major health scare continued Wednesday when the Browns defensive lineman returned practiced for the first time since having a procedure in December to fix an irregular heartbeat — a condition he has had for years — that led to him having his first season with Cleveland cut short. On Dec. 6, Bryant underwent a cardiac ablation, an operation that involves a catheter being inserted to destroy a small area of bad heart tissue. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder had at least two episodes last season when his heart raced out of control, including once during an Oct. 3 game against Buffalo. Bryant was hospitalized overnight and the 29-year-old had a recurrence two months later following a home loss to Jacksonville. It was then that Bryant, who was forced to leave a 2012 game for Oakland with a fast heart rate and light-headedness, was advised to undergo the ablation. "I felt like after I experienced what I did on the field that it was finally time to do something to fix that," Bryant said. "So while it was a trying time, I was also excited to get this procedure done and put this behind me. Since then, Ive been training and feeling real well. "Im back. Im healthy." Bryant missed the first minicamp practice on Tuesday for personal reasons, but joined his teammates for their second workout, which was held inside again because of rain and wet grounds. Bryant was welcomed back by everyone, including linebacker Quentin Groves, who also had a heart ablation in 2008. Groves condition was first diagnosed when he was in college but he didnt decide to have the procedure until it was spotted again at the NFL combine. "Its kind of scary not knowing what it is," Groves said. "The way it was explained to me when I had my procedure, the doctor told me one day you could not wake up. I was like, Well, OK, if I was your son,, what would you do? He said, I would have the procedure done.dddddddddddd "Anytime someone plays with your heart, youre kind of scared." Groves spoke with Bryant before he had the operation, and joked that he had to comfort his big teammate. "Des is a big baby. I have to rock him to sleep at night. No, Im just kidding," Groves said. "I just told him, Its a fairly simple procedure. I recommend you get it done. Im proud that you got it done before it became a problem for you." Bryant wasnt anxious about the operation. He was most fearful during the episodes when his heart raced. "I would feel like I had a fast heart rate and the next thing I know I was going to the hospital," he said. "That was the only real scary thing." Bryant was one of the biggest off-season acquisitions in 2013 by the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $34 million free agent contract. Bryant had an immediate impact, recording two sacks and a career-high 10 tackles in the opener against Miami. He was Clevelands best defensive lineman through four games, but his production fell off sharply following his hospitalization. He finished with 3 1/2 sacks in 12 games. Bryant, though, doesnt know if theres a direct correlation between his drop-off and heart ailment. Hes excited about the new defensive scheme brought in by coach Mike Pettine. "Theyve got a few wrinkles here and there that kind of switch things up that really make it challenging for offences," he said. "I cant wait to continue to grow and learn in this system and see where this will take us." Does he fit in it? "Absolutely," he said with a smile. "Im a good fit for any defence." NOTES: TE Keavon Milton worked out with the offensive linemen for the first time. The 6-foot-4, 293-pounder wore No. 63 after wearing No. 83 on Tuesday. ... After briefly considering a name change, Browns safety Donte Whitner will not drop the W and go by Hitner. "I didnt want to go through changing my credit cards, mortgages and cars," he said. "I cant do all of this paperwork. For one letter change? Id rather not." ___ AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Denny Hamlin started his full-time career at Joe Gibbs Racing with an upset victory in an exhibition race at Daytona. Over the years, he added three more wins in races that didnt count, including a sweep this season in the buildup to the Daytona 500. But when it came to the restrictor-plate races that paid points, Hamlin came up empty time and again. Until now. Hamlin, who opened the season with two exhibition victories only to finish second in the Daytona 500, was again sitting second in the closing laps Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. But he won a drag race with leader Kevin Harvick on a restart with two laps remaining, and was out front when NASCAR froze the field because of debris from an accident. Hamlin let out a deep sigh when the yellow flag waved. "Superspeedway win," he said on his radio. "With points! With points!" "I think Ive gotten better. Ive come close. When you drive as aggressive as I drove early in my career on superspeedways, youre going to have a huge risk, huge reward," he said after the win. "I was either wrecking or finishing in the top three every single superspeedway race and was wrecking most of the time. I think this way of driving and the way Im doing things now kind of lends itself to being a little bit more consistent on these type of race tracks, and really you learn from the guys that are good at it." Hamlin became the eighth winner in 10 races this season as drivers jockey to grab the 16 spots available in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. A victory conceivably gives a driver an automatic berth, and Joe Gibbs Racing now has both Hamlin and Kyle Busch eligible for the Chase. "I wasnt ever worried, but you get a little bit more panicked when its, Win a race and youre in Chase, " he said. "You see all these guys logging wins, wins, wins, and the next thing you know theyre running out of Chase spots. Now we can be a little bit more relaxed." The win came at the track where Hamlin made a brief return last year -- he ran just 23 laps before turning his car over to Brian Vickers -- after missing four races with a broken back. Hamlins return to the car briefly built some momentum for the No. 11 team, but as his back continued to ache, the season fell apart in late summer and it took until the season finale for Hamlin to score his first win of the year. He also missed the Chase for the first time in his career. It didnt appear that Hamlin had enough to beat Harvick, already a two-time winner this season, until the final restart. Harvick didnt get the help he needed from behind, was hung out without any drafting partners, and Hamlin pulled out to a comfortable lead. "We were in a good spot there at the end, and what you would want to put yourself in a position to win," Harvick said. "Our line just never formed up." As Hamlin pulled away, an accident deep in the pack scattered debris, and NASCAR was forced to throw the caution when a bumper was seen laying on the surface. The yellow prevented Greg Biffle, who led five times for a race-high 58 laps, from pulling out of line in an attempt to grab the victory away from Hamlin. "I just didnt want to pass too early. I was going to be the lone soldier on the outside lane," Biffle said. "So I was just waiting. I was setting up to go by him but just never had the chance." Clint Bowyer finished third and was followed by Michael Waltrip Racing teammate Brian Vickers as Toyota took the victory and three of the top four spots. AJ Allmendinger finished fifth in a Chevrolet, followed by Paul Menard and then Harvick, who faded to seventh. Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top 10. Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished a disappointing 26th despite leading three times for 26 laps, second most in the race. Danica Patrick led two times for six laps, and the crowd roared its approval when she drove to the front early in the race. She finished 22nd. "It was nice to lead laps," she said. "It was a fast, fast car so well be happy to take this one to Daytona." It was a rough day for Brad Keselowski, a two-time Talladega winner, who darted to the lead on Lap 14 but appeared to not have cleared Patrick before squeezing in front of her car. She tapped the back of Keselowskis car, sending him for a spin through the grass that caused enough damage to drop him six laps off the pace. "We werent clear enough to make that," crew chief Paul Wolfe told his driver. "Ill just call it at that: We werent clear enough to make that move." Keselowski raced in the heart of the pack after the first incident in an attempt to get his laps back under caution periods. But he was heavily criticized for triggering a 14-car accident with 51 laps remaining. The accident began when Keselowski spun in front of Trevor Bayne, and among those collected were Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson. "Brad made a pretty bold move early, a mind-boggling move, in going in front of Danica and spun out in front of the field and got away with it," Kenseth said. "This time we werent so lucky. He was driving really, really, really aggressively to try to get back up there. "If it was the other way around and it was anybody else except for him, wed all be getting lectured." Gordon also chastised Keselowski. "I had seen him for several laps driving over his head being pretty aggressive," Gordon said. "I knew he was laps down, but he wasnt doing anybody any favours, nor himself." Keselowski took the blame for the late accident. "I just spun out in front of the whole field," he said. "I dont know why, if I just busted my butt on my own or lost a tire, but I feel bad for everyone that got torn up." Coach Brad Stevens is ready for a long process, but will take a few wins like Friday night along the way. Brandon Bass had 16 points, including a pair of free-throws in the closing seconds to help the Boston Celtics fight back from an early hole and hang on for a 91-89 victory over the Orlando Magic. "We talked before about making winning plays in winning time, and we did. That was neat," Stevens said afterward. "Overall, Im very pleased with the result but we still have a lot to work on. Were not that much different than if we wouldnt have won the game." Trailing by three, the Magic had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Arron Afflalos jumper came from just a half-step inside the 3-point line. The win is the Celtics second straight and extends their win streak over Orlando to nine games. They will try to make it three straight Saturday at defending champion Miami. Avery Bradley added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics. Boston survived a 36 per cent shooting night from the field and 2-for-14 performance from beyond the arc. It was the fourth straight opponent that the Magic held under 40 per cent. But after taking an early lead they let the Celtics back in the game by committing a season-high 20 turnovers that led to 25 points on the other end. Afflalo led the Magic, who had their three-game win streak ended, with 23 points. Nik Vucevic finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds but was mostly bottled up by Bostons defence. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said the turnovers also contributed to Vucevics off night. "That didnt help us initiate our offence and then secondly, they did a good job of trying to deny him the basketball," he said. "Youve got to give them credit for their defence." Boston slipped out at a seven-point lead to begin the fourth quarter, but the Magic fought back to tie it at 75. The cushion grew again when Bradley stripped Victor Oladipo at midcourt and sprinted ahead for a dunk and eventual three-point play to put the Celtics back up 81-77 with under 6 minutes to play.dddddddddddd Afflalo knocked down a 3-pointer and was fouled by Bradley with 1:38 left. He promptly completed the four-point play to pull the Magic within 86-84. Kelly Olynyk responded with a jumper on Bostons next possession, but after rebounding a Magic miss on the other end, a floater by Jeff Green caromed off the rim and landed out of bounds. The Magic werent done. Afflalo saved a shaky possession with a driving layup and three-point play to cut the Celtics lead back to 88-87 with 26.5 remaining. Boston tried to run down the clock and Bass was eventually fouled and was able to connect on both of free-throws. Following a timeout, Afflalo got loose and banked in a jumper from the wing, but a review confirmed it he was inside the 3-point line. Bradley was fouled and connected on 1 of his 2 attempts. Oladipo then missed a desperation 3-pointer off the backboard at the buzzer. "We stuck together when we were missing shots, a lot of easy shots," Celtics guard Jordan Crawford said. But everybody stuck together as a team." Afflalo said the loss stings because they felt it was a throwback to lessons they thought they learned a year ago. "This team has been through a lot last year in understanding how valuable wins are," he said. "Outside of that opener (10-point loss to Indiana), weve lost two games now that we felt we should have won. So we are learning in a process, but I think we came to play. "I think the focus just needs to be sharper for a team thats trying to be a team that just won three in a row." NOTES: With the college basketball season opening on Friday night, Stevens said that he has stayed in tune with his former Butler team. "Yeah, I pay attention to it," he said. "Youre always invested more in the people you know and the people that youre really tight with and friends with. Ill be interested to see if my family watches our game (Saturday) night or the Butler game."... Magic F Tobias Harris missed his sixth straight game with a sprained left ankle. ... Reigning world champion Kaya Turski of Canada crashed in both runs of the womens ski slopestyle qualification round Tuesday in Sochi and failed to advance to the medal round. The 25-year-old from Montreal underwent knee surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in August, and has only been training on snow since Dec 9. After crashing in her first run of the two-run final, Turski needed to post a score higher than 70.6 to advance to the final. But she went down again, finishing her Olympic campaign in 18th place with a score of 28.0. Dara Howell of Huntsville, Ont., scored an 88.8 on her first run to lead all qualifiers. Teammate Kim Lamarre of Quebec City scored 85.4 and sits in second heading into the final, while Yuki Tsubota of Whistler, B.C., scored an 81.0 to place fourth. It came through again Saturday night, helping the Bulls overcome a 40.7 per cent shooting night to hold the Atlanta Hawks to nearly 20 points below their season average in a 91-84 victory. Opponents are shooting 43 per cent against the Bulls. "We have a defensive system and we work on it a lot," Joakim Noah said. "Its crazy how much we work on it. We work on defence every day." The Hawks, who were averaging 103.2 points, shot 37.2 per cent and were 8 of 28 from 3-point range. "We have a core of guys that understand it and are really good at it," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said about the defence. "We know if we defend and rebound and keep our turnovers down, were going to be in a position to win. Right now, when youre short-handed, thats really what you have to do. Its also what you have to do in every game, even when youre completely healthy." Mike Dunleavy scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Luol Deng added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, hitting two free throws with 8.8 seconds left to seal the win. Chicago led most of the way in winning for the fifth time in seven games. Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague scored 16 points apiece for the Hawks. A 3-point attempt by Kyle Korver that would have cut the Bulls lead to 84-82 with 4:18 left was overturned and ruled a shot clock violation upon review. Soon after, DeMarre Carroll was called for an offensive foul when the Hawks trailed 86-79. "That was a big swing, a big change in the game," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. Korver extended his NBA record of games with at least one 3-pointer made to 103 straight when he hit the first of his two 3-pointers with 9:59 left in the first quarter. Korver finished with eight points on 3-of-9 shooting. "I just have so much respect for those guys over there, how they continue to play hard every day and just grind and win games like tonight," Korver said. "They just find ways. Its not the prettiest basketball at times, but you have a lot of respect for them." The Hawks tied the game 67-all with 11:12 left on Mike Scotts free throw. It was the first time the Bulls hadnt led since there was 6:19 left in the first quarter.ddddddddddddBut Dunleavy answered with a 3-pointer, Noah scored on a putback and Jimmy Butler made a layup to put the Bulls ahead 74-69 with 8:41 remaining. Atlanta pulled to within one on Teagues layup with 5:38 left, but Dunleavy responded with a jumper and Taj Gibson scored on a dunk for an 84-79 lead. "Mike Dunleavy really had a heck of a second half," Budenholzer said. "Some of them were really well-contested, tough, difficult shots, and give him credit for making them." Carlos Boozer missed his first Bulls game of the season due to a sore right knee. MRI results on the knee were negative and the Bulls are hoping the injury isnt serious. Gibson started in his place. "The big thing is getting everyone back and healthy," Thibodeau said. "Hopefully, Carlos will be short term, which I believe he will be. This is the first time weve had the group relatively whole." Butler and D.J. Augustin each had 11 points, and Gibson and Noah had 10 points and 12 rebounds apiece. Scott scored 12 and Carroll had 10 for Atlanta. The Hawks pulled within one twice late in the third quarter but were unable to pull ahead. The Bulls led 67-64 after three quarters. "It was a close game and we just couldnt find a way," Budenholzer said. "I think we have to be a little smarter down the stretch. We have to compete every possession, every rebound." Deng made a half-court shot at the second-quarter buzzer to give the Bulls a 50-45 lead at the break. Korver had made a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to cut the Bulls lead to 47-45 after they were ahead by as many as 10. The Bulls led 26-18 after the first quarter. Atlanta had scored at least 100 points in 10 of 11 games. The Hawks were playing the second game of a back-to-back. NOTES: Hawks guard John Jenkins (low back pain) missed his sixth straight game. OTTAWA -- Hayley Wickenheiser doesnt put much stock in the flag-bearers curse. The womens hockey star, who will carry the Maple Leaf into the opening ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics, says the idea that she and her teammates could be under any more pressure is absurd. After all, they play a sport that many in Canada consider religion. So any sort of cosmic jinx pales in comparison to the weight of an entire countrys expectations for the womens team to win a fourth straight gold medal in Sochi. "I think theres just too much emphasis to put on that," Wickenheiser said Thursday via conference call from Austria. "The pressure that we feel is the pressure that always comes with playing hockey as a Canadian hockey player, whether youre male or female. "The country expects a gold medal. Whether I carry the flag or not, Im pretty sure our team doesnt feel any extra added incentive that theres more pressure to perform, because we already feel that already." Not all athletes see it that way. Diver Alexandre Despatie felt it would be a distraction and said hed decline any offer to carry the flag at the 2012 London Games. Kayaker Adam van Koeverden carried the flag at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished a disappointing eighth in the 1,000 metres -- although he did win a silver medal in the 500. Moguls skier Jean-Luc Brassard blamed his disappointing performance at the 1998 Nagano Olympics on being the flag-bearer a day earlier. Wickenheiser and her teammates hope the same thing doesnt happen to them. Hockey Canada says the women will march in the Feb. 7 opening ceremonies despite playing their first game the following night versus Switzerland. Brassard, the assistant chef de mission for the Sochi team, was on the panel that selected Wickenheiser along with chef de mission Steve Podborski, assistant chef France St. Louis and one athlete representative. Hockey Canada nominated her for the honour. "Throughout her successful career, this Canadian athlete has demonstrated true Canadian grit, patriotism and sportsmanship," said Podborski, adding that Wickenheiser will lead the Canadian team with "the utmost pride and class." Wickenheiser is embracing the opportunity to put her sport centre stage. "What I think it does is it shines a very positive light on the sport of womens hockey and just on our sport in general for the world to see," said the 35-year-old forward. "Thats a great responsibility and expectation that every nation in the world has to carry in and I think should really embrace." The Shaunavon, Sask., native, who is at a pre-Olympic camp in Austria and wasnt able to attend the formal announcement Thursday on Parliament Hill, will be making her fifth Winter Olympic appearance. But for the first time since 2006, she wont be Canadas captain. Caroline Ouellette has been handed that job, while Wickenheiser will be an alternate. But she remains Canadas biggest womens hockey star and a pioneer of the game. She and teammate Jayna Hefford will be the only players in the 2014 womens hockey tournament who have played in every Olympic Games since female hockey made its debut in 1998. Her stewardship extends beyond hockey as a spokesperson for Right To Play, Clean Air Champions, KidsSport, Spread The Net, Plan Canadas Because I Am A Girl and Classroom Champions. Wickenheiser read the athletes oath in the opening ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and she is running for election to the International Olympic Committees athletes commission in Sochi. Veteran speedskater Clara Hughes carried the flag at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics while womens hockey player Danielle Goyette was the flag-bearer at the 2006 Games in Turin. "I remember we were joking, like Dont trip and fall when you come in," Wickenheiser said of her conversation with Goyette before the opening ceremonies eight years ago. "Thats sort of the same thing we were talking about today. Geez, Id better watch some YouTube videos and figure out how the athletes have done this before." --- Marc Gasol Grizzlies Jersey . How can we tweak the system to make it less likely that teams are rewarded for losing records? Interleague play has been a boon for Major League Baseball. For the Blue Jays, not so much. This weekend, battling to get back over the .500 mark, John Gibbons and company kick off a stretch of seven straight games against the National League. They start with three at Pittsburgh against the struggling Pirates and then follow up that series with two at Philadelphia before returning home the next night to kick off a two-game set at Rogers Centre with the Phillies. After salvaging the final game of their three-game set at Kansas City on Thursday night with a 7-3 victory, the Jays sit at 13-15 but thanks largely to the injuries and flaws of the other teams in the AL East, they are still just two-and-a-half games back of the first place Yankees. Still, if the Blue Jays are going to keep it that close, theyve got to start beating the National League clubs with more regularity. Since interleague play came into being in 1997, the Blue Jays have compiled a record of 143-160. The first 16 years, the games were compressed into a small portion of the schedule when school was out in June and early July for the most part. Last season, with Houston moving to the American League, there were 15 teams in each league so there pretty well had to be at least one interleague game each and every day of the season. Last season, the first year under the new format, the Jays actually had a winning record against the National League clubs at 11-9. But overall, the Jays interleague record pales to those of the Yankees and Red Sox. The Yanks are 179-123 over the 17 years heading into this season. Boston is right behind them at 175-128. It isnt just the big boys who have success in interleague play, though. The Angels, who havent won a World Series since 2002, are 174-130 against the senior circuit over that span. The White Sox are 171-132 and even the Minnesota Twins are 165-137. If you average it out over 17 seasons, the Blue Jays have cost themselves about two games per season versus the Yanks and Red Sox in the East by struggling in interleague play. The American League has dominated this annual showdown between the two leagues, having the better record in 13 of the 17 seasons. Oddly enough, though, in the beginning the National League was up four winning seasons to three over the first seven interleague plays. The American League has dominated ever since. Nine American League teams are above .500 in the crossover play to just five National League clubs. The top National League club in interleague play is Atlanta at 148-131, followed by St. Louis at 135-120. Miami has done surprisingly well at 149-141. Luckily for the Blue Jays, the two teams they are playing against over the next seven days havent traditionally done well against the American League. Pittsburgh is the worst at 106-143 and the Phillies are 127-158. The Pirates have really had their troubles this season. After making the playoffs last season for the first time since 1992, the Bucs are 10-18 this time around. They lost one of their top pitchers in A.J Burnett in the offseason as a free agent to the Phillies, while lefty Wandy Rodriguez is recouping from a knee injury. But the Pirates real problem has been cashing in runners. They stranded 28 men in dropping a day/night doubleheader to Baltimore Thursday. On top of that, their number one catcher, Russell Martin of Montreal, is on the disabled list. The Pirates are in a virtual tie for last in the NL Central with the Cubs. The Phillies are only marginally better. They are 13-13, tied with Miami for last in the AL East. Yes the Phillies were stung by the retirement of Roy Halladay in the offseason but like the Pirates, their problem is run production. If you can believe it, their outfielders have only 15 extra base hits and the season is a month old. These are teams the Blue Jays must beat. Anything less than five out of seven will be a failure. One thing to remember about the Phillies is that they won a World Series in 2008; just six years ago. Yet this year, they lost 6,000 season ticket holders and their average attendance drop from a year ago, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, is 9,129 per game. This, for a team that has known recent success and has a pretty new and fan-friendly ballpark. The inclement weather of April likely plays a major part in the Phillies drop-off, but it just shows fans wont put up with mediocrity forever. I was more than a bit surprised that the team with the second biggest drop-off is Detroit at 5,493 per game. This, for a Tigers team that seems to win the AL Central nearly every year and has been to the World Series, albeit, hasnt won twice in the last eight seasons. You might have missed it but the Dodgers franchise reached a milestone on Wednesday, winning its 10,000th game. The only others to reach that magic figure are the Giants, the Cubs and the Braves. And of those four, the Cubs are the only teams to have played their entire existence in one city. The Dodgers Zack Greinke is putting up some obscure but impressive stats, nonetheless. Hes off to a 5-0 start this season and has made 18 straight starts where he has pitched five innings or more and given up two or fewer runs. That hasnt happened in 100 years -- since 1914. The last time Greinke started a season 6-0, he won the Cy Young Award in 2009 while in the American League. Adam Lind isnt close to returning to the active roster yet. Hes still rehabbing his back. But when he is healthy again, the Blue Jays could face an interesting dilemma if Juan Francisco keeps hitting the way he is. There is no way the Jays can carry Edwin Encarnacion, Lind and Francisco on the same roster. Francisco has one edge over Lind in the versatility department in that he can also play 3rd base in a pinch. Linds not in any kind of jeopardy, but this situation will be interesting to watch. Eddie Jones has delayed naming his England team to play Fiji until Friday due to fitness concerns over a number of players. Billy Vunipola, Nathan Hughes and Elliot Daly are all carrying knocks sustained in last Saturdays victory over South Africa and the England head coach is looking to see how they resolve themselves over the next 24 hours. Were prepared for whats going to be a difficult game but weve had really good preparation, albeit a few injury concerns which were trying to sort out at the moment, said Jones. Theres no regulation. We didnt ask them to name it 48 hours before. There is no regulation. There is no etiquette. EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Teddy Bridgewater wants to win, of course, a given when it comes to any NFL players public commentary. The other stated goal this week? To make that absence from the field a one-game blip.Bridgewater said Wednesday he feels 100 per cent healthy after spraining his left ankle in the fourth quarter of his first NFL start, Sept. 28 against Atlanta. The Minnesota Vikings held their rookie quarterback out last week at Green Bay with only three days for him to heal. Now, with nine more days to get ready for the game against Detroit, theres little doubt who will be taking the snaps Sunday. The ankles feeling good. Im excited to get back out there, Bridgewater said. The Vikings sure missed him in that 42-10 loss to the Packers, when Christian Ponder filled in and threw 22 incompletions, including two interceptions. One was returned for a touchdown, and the other set one up.It was very hard, Bridgewater said of having to watch instead of play. Especially being a competitor, you always want to be out there with the guys.Bridgewater didnt directly answer questions about whether he lobbied coach Mike Zimmer to play in the shortened week, but he didnt hint of any discontent with the decision. Bridgewater, fast becoming a polished, poised guy at the podium whos as quick with the company line and he is moving around in the pocket, repeatedly praised the rehabilitation work hes done with athletic trainer Eric Sugarman and his staff. He said he wont wear a brace on the ankle and isnt worried about being able to cut and plant.Bridgewater said he doesnt think he has to prove anything about his durability, but he acknowledged a desire for career longevity.I want to be the guy, for 10-plus years, he said.Zimmer said he had no concern about Bridgewaters availability this week. Even against a Lions defence that has allowed the fewest yards per game in the NFL and the second-fewest points per game, the expectations will be there for him to play as productively and capably as he did in that dazzling debut against the Falcons. My expectations are probably as high as everybody elses. I understand that there will be some bumps and bruises along the way with all the young guys and young quarterbacks, Zimmer said. But Teddy is a super competitor. Hes got a lot of poise, and hes got a lot of talent. I hope his expectations are high.NOTES: Zimmer said he expects strong safety Harrison Smith to play against the Lions. Smith has shed the walking boot on his sprained left ankle and was doing some running on the side at the beginning of practice along with linebacker Chad Greenway, whose availability is again in doubt because of broken ribs. ... Adrian Petersons trial in Texas on a charge of child abuse has been tentatively set for Dec. 1, but Zimmer said that didnt change his outlook on whether or not the running back could rejoin the team this season. I believe in him, that hes a good guy. So I wish the best for Adrian, and then well worry about the rest when more concrete news comes out, Zimmer said.___Online:AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Austin Romine Yankees Jersey . -- So much for concern that running back Marshawn Lynch would be absent from the Seattle Seahawks minicamp. Already assured of spending the winter break in the lead, Bayern next hosts Freiburg in the midweek 16th round and could increase the margin.Elsewhere, Wolfsburg travels to troubled Borussia Dortmund, which desperately needs a victory. Here are some things to know about the Bundesliga round to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday:___MORE RECORDS?With the opposition fading away, all that seems left for Bayern to do in the Bundesliga is to chase its own records. If Bayern wins the final two matches before the winter break, against Freiburg and Mainz, it will end the first half of the season with 45 points, one more than its record from 2005.And if Bayern concedes fewer than four goals in the next two matches, it will break another record. The side has conceded only three goals so far in 15 matches. The record for best defence is seven goals conceded in the first half of a season.___FREIBURG SURPRISE?Freiburg is a small, well-run team that manages to hang on in the Bundesliga despite losing its best players at the end of every season. Coach Christian Streich is a clever tactician who knows how to get the best out of a squad with no stars.Freiburg is one of the three teams that managed to play Bayern to a draw last season. Streichs team sits 15th after as many matches this seasson.ddddddddddddWe played two bad matches. The others were quite good, Streich said after Saturdays 0-0 draw at home with Hamburg. Freiburg has lacked fortune and efficiency in front of goal.___DORTMUNDS FALLBorussia Dortmunds revival lasted only one match and the 2011 and 2012 champion is in danger again after losing 1-0 at Hertha Berlin.Staying true to the curse of misfortune following the club this season, it lost playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan for six weeks due to a thigh injury.Wolfsburg will be looking to rebound from a 1-1 draw with promoted Paderborn. Dortmund has lost a league-high nine games, and has only once managed not to lose after falling behind 1-0 in nine matches.___POST-WORLD CUP SLUMPKevin Grosskreutz is the latest member of Germanys World Cup squad to lose his place in Dortmunds starting line-up. Grosskreutz wasnt even in the squad for the match in Berlin.Roman Weidenfeller, Erik Durm and Matthias Ginter already had been benched. But Grosskreutz is a special case. Dortmund-born Grosskreutz had played in 232 of 255 possible matches for Dortmund.Coach Juergen Klopp said this was a one-time decision.___CHINA PLAYER FOR WOLFSBURG?Wolfsburg is about to sign a Chinese player, with director Klaus Allofs saying only a few details remain to be cleared before Xizha Zhang joins the team. The China midfielder watched Wolfsburgs 1-1 draw with Paderborn and would become the fourth Chinese player to play in the Bundesliga.Wolfsburg believes Xixzhe can make it in the Bundesliga but the move will also help the clubs marketing activities in Asia and China, Allofs said. Salvador, Brazil - Bosnia-Herzegovina head coach Safet Susic has announced that he is stepping down from his position following Bosnias exit from the World Cup. Susic helped guide his team to its first appearance at a World Cup, but the side was unable to advance from a manageable Group F after losing its first two games before a 3-1 win over Iran to close out its competition. "This was my last game at the World Cup," Susic told Brazilian newspaper Lancenet. "Unfortunately there will not be another one. Sometimes it is a nice feeling to be free of obligations. "I can decide my own fate and this is my answer." Bosnia was widely expected to make a run at second place in the group behind favorites Argentina. But after one-goal losses to Argentina and Nigeria, Susic was left feeling disappointed that his side didnt get the results. "We should have done better by the quality of our players but now is the time for this team to look forward to (UEFA) Euro 2016 qualifiers," Susic said. The 31-year-old Argentine player described it as a "difficult day," but told a news conference that he was "super grateful" to his sport. Saying his shoulder did not "respond well" to treatment, Nalbandian concluded: "I cannot compete." Nalbandian spent 13 years on the ATP tour, reaching No. 3 in the rankings in 2006 and spending five consecutive years in the top 10. He reached at least the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments, losing to Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the 2002 final at Wimbledon. INDIANAPOLIS -- Pacers star Paul George had his platinum All-Star ring valued at $15,000 stolen from his home Monday night. The Indianapolis police report said there was no forced entry in the burglary, estimating the total value of items taken at nearly $16,000. The ring from the 2014 game included multiple diamonds. Also taken was a watch valued at $700. Georges parents, who attended Monday nights playoff game against Atlanta, reported the theft shortly before midnight and not long after the Pacers lost 107-97 to fall into a 3-2 deficit in their best-of-seven series with the Hawks. Carter Hart Jersey .com) - Delon Wright scored 17 points and No.BROSSARD, Que. -- Without Carey Price, the run for a first Stanley Cup in 21 years got steeper and longer for the Montreal Canadiens. Coach Michel Therrien looked grim and even angry as he delivered the news Monday morning that the goaltender who backstopped Canada to gold at the Sochi Olympics will miss the rest of the NHL Eastern Conference final. He gave no details of the injury, a suspected right knee problem, but suggested Price would be back if the Canadiens can get past the New York Rangers and reach the Stanley Cup final. "Carey Price wont be able to play, not only for tonight but for the rest of the series," said Therrien. "Really disappointed. Hes our best player. "We need to rally around Carey. We need to give him a chance to play again this season." According to Bodog, those words sent betting money went flying off the Canadiens bandwagon and onto New Yorks as Montreal pondered the notion of winning with either backup Peter Budaj or third stringer Dustin Tokarski in goal. The coach would not say which of them would start in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Monday night. Budaj has been with the NHL club all season, but has a terrible career playoff record that includes an 0-2-0 record and an .843 save percentage. Tokarski had never played an NHL playoff game, but the 24-year-old has excelled at every level, winning a Memorial Cup with Spokane in 2008, a world junior championship with Canada in 2009 and an AHL title with Norfolk in 2012. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2008 and acquired by Montreal Feb. 14, 2013 for Cedrick Desjardins in a swap of minor-league goalies. He spent most of the season with AHL Hamilton, but played three games for Montreal this season and posted a 2-0 shutout against Buffalo. Price clutched his right knee when Rangers forward Chris Kreider crashed into him skates-first at 3:15 of the second period of New Yorks shock 7-2 win in the series opener on Saturday afternoon. The Canadiens goaltender got up and finished the period, but didnt look comfortable as he allowed two goals in the final 1:01. He was replaced in the third by Budaj, who allowed three goals on eight shots. After the game, Therrien said he took Price out not because of an injury but because there was no use leaving him in with the team playinng poorly.dddddddddddd He was angrier the next day when it became clear the injury was worse than first suspected, saying Kreider could have tried to avoid the collision. And he was simmering on Monday, pointing out Kreiders history of hitting goalies. Kreider left Ottawas Craig Anderson with a knee injury when he crashed the crease during the regular season and he also elbowed Marc-Andre Fleurys head in Game 6 of the conference semifinals, although the Pittsburgh goalie was not hurt. "Looking at the incident, its a reckless play," said Therrien. "Thats the truth. "And Kreider, thats not the first time hes going at goalies. So we end up losing our best player. But our group faced a lot of adversity throughout the course of the season. We have the attitude to respond really well and thats what Im expecting, starting tonight." Kreider said his main regret was that he missed the net with his shot as he went in on a breakaway and lost his footing. But Therrien said the Canadiens were more concerned with trying to win the series than with vengeance. "We know what happened with Kreider, we know his history, we know a lot of things," said Therrien. "But our main focus is to make sure we play a solid game. "Make sure we play hard, we play with passion, that we be disciplined, and play the way we are capable of playing."
