Organizations which have a gross of $5,000 or less a year are able to be considered nonprofits under 501c3 regulations without filing Form 1023, to become a registered 501c3. Now you do not necessarily want an organization to be in this category forever, but it make starting up a nonprofit much easier. Just make sure you send in your organization's yearly 990 form to maintain status. For more information on this topic, along with helpful links, take a look at this weeks blog post, linked above. Also head over to the Ultimate Donations blog for more posts dealing with all things nonprofit.

Roughly $360 billion in federal funding is now earmarked for The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and expanding eligibility for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL). The PPP is for payroll costs, and if spent in the desired manner, will be forgiven. The EIDL has much broader usages but beyond an emergency $10,000 infusion, the funds are loans with interest (Lower than normal interest at least). The EIDL money can be rolled over into the PPP funds that are able to be forgiven, but must be spent on payroll costs after PPP funds have been extinguished (In essence, EIDL funds can be treated as PPP funds under certain circumstances).

Nonprofits that have fewer than 500 employees and operational on January 31, 2020 or before have a good chance of being eligible for either or both of these funding opportunities.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is handling the roll out, with approved lenders (Banks, etc.) being the point of contact for organizations in need. This is not financial advice but intended to let you know about these programs and to contact an appropriate financial adviser. For a much more in-depth look at these programs as well as links to the program forms, SBA, and more, take a look at our blog post on COVID-19 relief loans and grants.

Feeling rejected can be debilitating and feed into not wanting to take any similar risk again. This stifling feeling wears on nonprofit staff everywhere when contacting potential donors.

A well thought out strategy can, at first, help alleviate the fear and eventually make you feel like a superhero. Research potential donors through multiple sources to get an understanding of what makes them tick. Practice your pitch in-front of the mirror, family, and coworkers until you work out your body language and know your talking points forward and backward.

Make sure the pitch has personability and authenticity. Connect with donors through personal stories. But, don't lose your overall direction of conversation; you need to be specific with the point your are trying to get across and convey urgency. Engage with potential donor by making sure to ask them questions and have them involved with the conversation.

In the end, whether or not a donation was made, send a thank you note. It gives the message that you appreciate their time spent hearing you out as well as making you stand out from the crowd. For a much more detailed post, take a look at our 12 Tips for Anxiety Free Donation Requests post on the
